Rise of the Ancients

When we were invited to paint in the middle of Death Valley for a small annual alien-themed festival, our imaginations were beamed across the galaxy and we quickly hopped on to the opportunity. Scott, the founder of Desert Alien, asked us paint a storage unit in the main area of the festival. He gave us simple instructions, “Make it a desert scene about aliens.” Say no more, Scott!

PERHAPS OUR FEARS ABOUT EXTRATERRESTRIAL CONTACT ARE MERELY A PROJECTION OF OUR OWN BACKWARDNESS, AN EXPRESSION OF OUR GUILTY CONSCIENCE ABOUT OUR PAST HISTORY…

- Carl Sagan, The Cosmos

We appreciated the free rein and let our minds wander to the Sahara Desert and the mysterious Egyptian pyramids. There are many theories on the Egyptian culture’s relationship to the cosmos, most of which were inspired by the fact that the Great Pyramids on the Giza plateau was by design correlated with the relative positions of the three stars in the constellation of Orion which make up Orion's Belt. We thought Nefertiti being beamed up by a flying pyramid was a fun twist. It made us think about how alien we were to our own past, putting together the few pieces left behind to create a picture that is up for interpretation.
